On the winding roads of Nusa Penida, I caught a glimpse of a moment that felt timeless. Looking down toward the ocean, boats drifted from shore, carrying fathers and fishermen to sea. In the shallows, one lone boy stood waist-deep in the water, watching.

His gaze was fixed on the boat disappearing into the horizon. In that look was longing—the dream of one day joining his father, of stepping into the role he admired so deeply. For just a minute, as my scooter curved around the ocean’s edge, our stories aligned: I watched him as he watched his father sail away.
