Seamstress
Nepal Portrait Collection

Country: Nepal
As I watched her work, brows furrowed in concentration, I was transported back to my own childhood. I remembered sitting beside my grandmother as she guided me through the art of sewing, reminding me to have patience, to keep practicing, to trust the process.
In Seamstress, I recognized the same moment of learning—the hesitation, the determination, the quiet struggle of turning practice into skill. Beyond the fabric in her hands was the story of resilience, tradition, and the timeless connection between generations of women who stitch their lives together one thread at a time.
Photographed in fall 2012, this portrait speaks not only of a young woman’s journey, but also of my own lineage, echoing the wisdom my grandmother passed down through her gentle instruction.
