Fake Beggar

Nepal Portrait Collection

In Nepal, everyone makes a living from their talents—some more unusual than others. I often passed this man near the monasteries, dressed as a beggar and leaning into the mercy of tourists.
One day, I saw him arrive by taxi, step out, and transform himself into character. His performance was flawless, honed for the steady stream of newcomers unfamiliar with his act. Watching him work, I couldn’t help but think: if there were a Golden Globe for street acting, he’d win it.
Fake Beggar is both portrait and performance—a glimpse into the ingenuity, resilience, and theatricality that shapes daily life.
