The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida can take up most of a day. From the top deck, I looked down and noticed a fisherman making use of the time in his own way. With just a single line and hook, he sat patiently, waiting for the evening meal to find its way to him.

Around him, the ferry buzzed with ordinary distractions—smoke, chatter, naps in the midday heat. But he remained focused, determined, and still.
